Oswaldo Juarez came to the United States to better his life. Instead, coming to the US might have been what saved his life. The 19-year-old exchange student was in the United States to study English, but after developing a chest cold that refused to go away, doctors tested him and gave him the diagnosis everyone has been dreading: extremely drug resistant tuberculosis, or XXDR TB. He is the first-known case in the United States, but he won’t be the last. The diseases we all thought were wiped out are coming back, with a vengeance.
The most fearsome of these diseases has to be TB. Tuberculosis ravaged the US for generations, killing millions of people. Despite the efforts of humanitarians like Melinda Gates, TB is still around and thanks to improper drug administration, it’s getting tougher and tougher to cure. It might not be too long before we see the return of sanatoriums like Waverly Hills again.
