Well, you can’t say I didn’t give it a good run when I made my Golden Globe predictions. I got a lot of them right, but I got the main ones wrong. After all, I don’t think anyone expected Avatar to make as much money as it has, nor did I expect James Cameron to win Best Director and Avatar to claim Best Drama during the 2010 Golden Globes. Yet there he was, claiming one of many awards last night thanks to his depressing blue aliens. Here’s a rundown of the evening’s winners.
So how did I do? Well, not too bad all things considered. I got Mo’Nique and Sandra Bullock for best actresses in the drama category. The Hangover’s win in best comedy was as much of a given as Up’s win in best animated feature was. I even managed to pick Christoph Waltz’s win as Best Supporting Actor. However, I whiffed on pretty much all the other categories, including best actors for comedy and drama, best drama overall, and best actress in a comedy. It’s not great work on my part, but I did okay.
All in all, it was a pretty standard awards ceremony, unlike the one during the writer’s strike. Ricky Gervais was a really good host, and his daredevil attitude gave the show a much-needed jolt of humor on an otherwise subdued night in the wake of the Haiti tragedy. Here’s hoping he takes off in Hollywood.
