I can appreciate a fine ham. Like any reasonable person, I adore a nice big chunk of the other white meat. Honey baked, salt-cured, par-boiled, jellied, or fried, I’ll take ham pretty much any way I can get it. That’s why I wish I could try the £1800, 15-pound Iberico ham that went on sale in the flagship store of Selfridges in London yesterday. Can you imagine just how heavenly $2954.70 ham would taste? I’m drooling just thinking about it!
The Iberico ham is made from one of 50 pigs, hand-raised and hand picked by ham expert Manuel Maldonado. The lucky swine were fed a special diet of acorns and roots to give them a distinctive flavor and were raised in Extremadura, Spain. The pigs were slaughtered, then their meat was cured for a staggering 3 years before the hams were carved and placed in a hand-made wooden box and wrapped in a tailored apron.
To make sure you’re not getting a sub-par ham at a premium price, the 50 pigs have been DNA authenticated so consumers are confident they’re getting the best ham money can buy. It’s the perfect companion to an $1158 bottle of beer, don’t you think? Melts in your mouth, not in your wallet!
