YouTube has long depended on the support of independent filmmakers. I mean, it’s a video website; how else would they get content if it wasn’t for directors and producers and kids with video cameras looking to make a name for themselves? That’s why it’s a natural extension of YouTube’s brand to get into the video-on-demand rental game. Their first client? The Sundance Film Festival. Sundance is in the independent movie game; YouTube is in the independent movie game… it’s a natural partnership!
Do I think Netflix and Blockbuster have anything to worry about? No, not yet. However, video on demand is the wave of the future as more and more people eschew physical media for the delivery of content. I watch video on demand from one source or another on a daily basis. YouTube is starting with Sundance, but it won’t end there. They’ve got Google’s money, and when Google enters your business… that means trouble.
