After one too many complaints, the corporate offices at Tim Hortons, the Canadian Starbucks, had enough. Jimmy Craig, a frequent customer from St. Andrews, New Brunswick, has been on the wrong end of the banhammer after his complaints about the quality of Tim Hortons coffee. He described it as “burnt, brown water.” Even after staff made him a fresh pot, the complaints still came, from store manager to store owner to corporate offices. Now he’s banned from his local coffee shop. no more drinking that burnt, brown water for at least a year.
It seems to me that, if his problem was with the flavor even with a fresh pot, the problem is how Tim Hortons roasts their beans, not how they brew the specific pot. That’s a matter of much debate amongst coffee drinkers. A lot of places like Starbucks tend to over-roast their beans, so their brew coffee gets a distinct burnt taste. That seems like it’s also Hortons problem.
Not that I’ve ever had Tim Hortons. I just know that brewing coffee, from the beans on up, is an art, not a science. One that doesn’t lend itself well to conglomerates, for whatever reason. Local is always the best option for coffee, in my opinion.
