The Vancouver Winter Olympics are bringing out the best in all the competitors and their supporting countries. After all, it’s not just a cross-country skiing competition or a display of ice dancing, it’s about national pride. That’s why a group of Russian musicians decided to ply their trade to show support to their athletes, only they didn’t use a traditional Russian song. No, they took the Tartar language and traditional folk instruments and combined those elements with one of the biggest, loudest, sing-alongingest rock anthems in history, “We Are The Champions,” by Queen. You’ve heard that song a billion times, but never like this. The result is pretty spectacular.
This is the kind of thing the Olympics is about. It’s not winning at all costs, it’s all about supporting your country, giving your all, and doing your best. Not everyone can win a medal, but just by making the Olympics, you’ve accomplished something great. Throw in a surprisingly cool cover song, and the pieces start to come together.
