On Wednesday, Team USA won more medals in a day than the entire US team won at the 1988 Olympics. So far, the US has won 24 medals in a variety of events both expected and unexpected. From Bode Miller’s gold medal in the Men’s Alpine Skiing Super Combined to Seth Wescott’s gold medal in the Men’s Snowboard Cross, the US has been taking on and besting all comers at this Olympics, despite funding problems, difficult terrain, and unfriendly crowds. No one is more surprised by this than the United States Olympic Committee.
For example, in an attempt to win a staggering 35 medals on their home venue, Canada has pumped $120 million dollars into an ambitious Olympic program designed to help the north capture the podium. So far, this has resulted in nine medalists. Meanwhile, the US spread only $16 million around, mostly at event favorites like US skiier Lindsey Vonn, and the results have been historic for Team USA. Of course, there’s a lot of events left to finish, but barring any unfortunate mistakes, this is looking to be a great year for Americans on ice.
