When I was talking about unknown Google tools the other day, I neglected to mention Google’s fill-in-the-blank search helper, Google Suggests. Basically, this is something Google has in their search engine that allows you to type in a phrase, then select from a list of things that people search for most often. For example, typing in “mystery” brings up phrases like “mystery google,” “mystery science theater 3000,” and “mystery shopper,” among others. However, this can lead to some weird results. Typing “how do I get” yields the very frightening answer, “how do I get my sister to sleep with me.” Here’s a great list of other disturbing Google Suggests answers compiled by the Huffington Post.
People are searching for a whole lot of quotes, song lyrics, and the like. I do that, too. If I can remember a chunk of a song, but can’t quite get my head around the title, I’ll just look up the lyrics. Same thing with movie quotes, TV quotes, and pieces of books. I’d imagine that explains a whole lot of the weirder Google Suggests trends.
