During his radio show, in the process of making some jokes, Tony Kornheiser, the cohost of Pardon The Interruption and former analyst on Monday Night Football, made a couple cracks about some of his fellow ESPN characters. He discussed SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm’s penchant for dressing like Britney Spears (red patent leather go-go boots, short plaid skirts, and sausage-casing tight shirts), then proceeded to take shots at ESPN personality Chris Berman’s weight (and omnipresent NutriSystem commercial) before making cracks about himself and his own troll-like features. The cost of his Mr. Blackwell fashion criticism is a two-week suspension without pay from PTI.
Was Kornheiser out of line? Meh, probably, but Hannah Storm is a woman who has gotten in trouble for her choice of outfits before, so it’s not as if she hasn’t been criticized for how she dresses. He does raise a valid point about some of her more interesting outfit choices, which hardly seem appropriate for any television anchor, but like a lot of people, I get the feeling that this has a lot more to do about his public criticism of network stalwart Chris Berman during Berman’s contract renegotiation year than anything he could’ve said about Hannah Storm. This is how ESPN works; they look to punish little issues while letting bigger criticisms fly. Consider how the network handled the Steve Phillips/Brooke Hundley affair.
So, Tony, thanks. Because of your dumb comments, I have to suffer through two whole weeks of PTI fill-in host Dan LeBatard. Wonderful. He makes a mistake and the viewers get punished for it!
