A woman in Quetta, Pakistan, is celebrating the birth of a healthy baby girl this morning, but the circumstances of the baby’s birth are quite remarkable. Birth is always a remarkable thing, but when you’re giving birth in an auto rickshaw stuck in a traffic jam thanks to a passing presidential motorcade, well… that’s pretty remarkable. Fortunately, both mother and baby are fine!
The unnamed woman was in the process of having contractions when her brother, Mohammed Zafar, tried to rush her to the local hospital, about the time Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari was passing by. Given how popular a pass-time it is to blow up the President in Pakistan, security was high and all traffic was sealed off in the area, including the rickshaw Zafar and his sister were riding in.
For his part, President Zardari is reported to be very upset at the distress caused the woman and her family by security forces. He’s ordered an investigation into the incident, saying, “Alternative routes must be provided to ensure that the people do not suffer.”
