Well, with the beginning of California’s no-cursing week comes the close of another weird week-long event. Nepal’s 10-day cursing festival ended on Sunday with a big bonfire and lots of smiles and happiness all around. The festival has been taking place for as long as anyone can remember, with the young men of neighboring villages Parsawa and Laxmipur hurling insults at one another, each other, passers-by, and themselves. The whole shebang closes right before the Hindu holiday Holi, in which people celebrate by getting into fights with colored paint powder and water.
No one knows how the unusual tradition, which seems to be only in these two villages, got started, but residents are in no hurry to end it. The event wraps up with no hard feelings on either side, and the chance to cut loose is enjoyed by folks on all sides of the event. In these trying times, it’s as good a reason as any to let your hair down and have a good time.
