Quan and Angelina Ha thought they were doing something good for the environment, and in a way they were. The pair ripped their lawn out two years ago, replacing it with a big patch of mostly mulch. They cut their water usage down from nearly 300,000 gallons in 2007 to just under 60,000 in 2009. You think they’d get rewarded for that in drought-starved SoCal. Instead, they’ve been hauled into court.
The city of Orange, California, has laws requiring that 40 percent of your lawn be covered in growing, living greenery. Apparently, mulch, drought-resistant plants, and some gnomes isn’t enough cover. The Has have tried repeatedly to get their lawn into compliance to avoid the lawsuit, but now they’re going to have to fight it out with the city in court.
