It’s true that the Internet, in some form or fashion, has been around since the 1960’s. However, it was 25 years ago today that the first company registered the first .com address. On March 15, 1985, Symbolics Computers of Cambridge, Massachusetts, registered Symbolics.com, the oldest active domain address online. Happy 25th birthday, modern Internet! It wasn’t until 1997 that the 1,000,000th dotcom address was registered.
In contrast, there are 668,000 dotcom addresses registered every month. Verisign, the top-level domain registrar, logs 53 billion requests for various web addresses every day (that’s more per day than all of the requests from 1995 total!) I own five of them myself, and I didn’t even think about running or writing for websites until college! There are 1.7 billion people online, and that number is only going to grow as technology spreads across the globe like a technological squid fighting with a shark.
