To further cement its status as a forward-looking nation, the United Kingdom has announced plans to launch their own version of NASA, beginning in April. While Britain has always had a strong aerospace industry, most of their work in space flight and technology related to space exploration has been shuttled under the purview of various administrative organizations or under the blanket of the European Space Agency. While British astronauts will still take to the skies under ESA watch, the UK Space Agency will now be in charge of Britain’s various governmental and civilian space programs, replacing the older British National Space Centre.
To prove they’re as serious about interstellar technology as they are about Internet technology, the UK is building a $60-million-dollar International Space Innovation Centre to serve as a hub of operations for Britain’s new space initiatives. It will be built near the ESA’s U.K. Research Center in Oxfordshire, England. The new investments could build the British space industry into a $6o-billion-dollar industry over the next 20 years.
