If you thought the most promiscuous animals in nature were syphilitic Facebook users, then you were wrong. Even the horniest pervert online has nothing on the Littorina saxatilis, or rough periwinkle snail, which is the most promiscuous animal in nature. The females lay clutches of eggs in groups of 70 or so, and for every 70 eggs, the female snail averages about 19 or so male fertilizing partners. As for the male snails, they track other snails via mucus trail (sexy!) and will mate with pretty much anything they come across, even if it’s not the right species or gender for breeding purposes.
So, basically, it’s like college for snails, circa 1968. It doesn’t matter who, what, where, when, why, or how, these snails are getting their slimy, slithery freak on. I’ve been calling them the sex-atilis, or alternately the slutty snail.
