Everyone loves to complain about the price of gas, but like all commodities, the price of gas is not equal across all 50 states. So the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) got together, compiled the data, and broke down the numbers to determine two sets of numbers: who pays the most for gas per year by percentage of their income spent, and how bad these numbers might get if gas prices stayed at record highs. Mississippi was the big loser. Unsurprisingly, people from my home state pay the sixth-highest for gas under both scenarios (and neither of them are good). Feel free to find your state on the full-sized chart.
I have to admit I’m shocked to see how cheap gas is in New York. I figured Texas or Alaska or some other big oil-producing state would be at the bottom, not the home of the Big Apple. I guess all the money and public transportation balance out the cost of paying for gas yourself. Still, it’s past time for the electric car, don’t you agree?
