When asked about the most-watched city in the United States, where would you look? New York, with its history of being a target for terrorism? Washington, D.C., with its many high-value targets and rich, important people? As it turns out, the most-watched city in the US is Chicago, Illinois. While the city has less cameras than New York or London (the world’s most surveyed city), the big differences between Chicago and those two is that A) Chicago’s cameras work, unlike New York’s, and B) no system as as completely integrated as Chicago’s.
Literally, any surveillance camera in Chicago, public or private, is part of this network. Police and other safety crews can access the camera network in a command center, or even from some specially-outfitted squad cars. Strangely enough, Chicago loves this system. They love how efficient it is, how much it helps deter crime, and the only time police hear complaints is when residents want a new camera installed or they’re afraid the old one is taken away.
