If there’s one thing that unites humanity, it’s a consistent belief that we are not alone. In this case, some 20 percent of the world’s population believes that aliens walk among us, disguised as humans. At least, that’s what a recent Reuters Ipsos poll uncovered. The poll covered 23,000 people spread out amongst 22 countries, and it revealed some interesting trends.
For example, 40 percent of people polled from India and China believed in the existence of aliens on earth compared to only 8 percent from countries like Belgium, Sweden, and the Netherlands. More men (22 percent) than women (17 percent) believe in the presence of extraterrestrial life (probably because the women are too busy shopping). Most believers are under age 35, or what I like to call the X-Files generation. Of greatest interest, is the fact that larger countries have more prevalence towards UFO belief than smaller states.
“It would appear that that there’s a modest correlation between the most populated countries and those more likely to indicate there may be aliens disguised amongst them compared with those countries with the smaller populations,” said John Wright, Senior Vice President of Ipsos. “Maybe the it’s a simple case that in a less populated country you are more likely to know your next door neighbor better.”
