Despite her long and fruitful career in entertainment, Dixie Carter will probably always be known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on the popular television program “Designing Women.” The sassy, smart, Southern woman was Carter’s most enduring creation, as the show ran for seven seasons and spent many more years in syndication. Ms. Carter passed away on Saturday from complications related to endometrial cancer. She was only 70 years old. She’s pictured above, on your left, with her “Designing Women” cast-mates.
Her most recent performance in the medium was as Gloria Hodge, a 7-show arc for which she was nominated for an Emmy award. She leaves behind her husband, veteran actor Hal Holbrook, two daughters, and fans around the world who recognize her TV, stage, and charity work. Her support and love of the arts will live on in her memory, as she’s spent a great deal of time, money, and effort to enrich her native Tennessee and the world with the gift of entertainment.
