Conan O’Brien got bumped by a returning late night host. Surely Conan wouldn’t bump another last night host, would he? Actually, he would, but this is a special case. Conan O’Brien making his return to the late-night talk show game by jumping from network TV to cable, taking over the 11:00 PM slot on the cable network TBS. TBS already has a host at 11 PM in the person of George Lopez. However, this is a different case.
Apparently, George Lopez personally recruited Conan to come on at 11:oo PM and volunteered to move his show to 12, so he could have Conan be his lead-in program! When Conan expressed some reservations about the deal, Lopez called him personally to encourage him to take the job. TBS has been working hard to become a player in independent programming, and the Team Coco/Team Loco late-night block gives them a surprisingly strong pair of late night hosts to challenge both the traditional network powers like Jay Leno and Comedy Central’s Daily Show/Colbert Report team.
Said Conan of the announced plan, “In three months I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly.”
