A month ago, I talked about the potential disaster that could be caused by a volcanic eruption on Iceland, thanks to Iceland’s location and the strength of previous eruptions. Well, Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano eruputed as feared, and as I expected, the world is feeling the consequences. While it’s too soon to know the environmental impact, there was an immediate impact on air travel. Airports throughout Northern Europe have closed for business due to the ash cloud interfering with air travel.
Most of the airports in Norway have closed down. Air traffic is grounded in Scotland. London’s Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, has also closed. This has caused a spiral of delayed and canceled flights throughout the world as airports all over try to route traffic around the ominous and growing cloud of ash and debris from the eruption, which punched a hole through the glacier and may cause massive flooding in Iceland before all is said and done.
