James Bond is one of the world’s most popular and enduring movie characters; the spy is a hero to men everywhere and an international sex symbol. He’s been the star of some 22 different films, and the 23rd flick was in the process of production. However, financial troubles may have done what Dr. No never could, as production on Bond 23 was halted by EON Productions due to worries over MGM’s future, according to producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The two don’t know when production will resume, but it won’t be until MGM has a future in place.
The studio, which has been involved in all the official Bond films since they bought out United Artists in 1981, has been trying to find a buyer. Thanks to some $3.7 billion dollars in debt, the studio has been unable to do so. No matter what happens to MGM, it’s unlikely that Bond will remain on the shelf. From Sean Connery to Brosnan and Craig, the films have been huge money-makers for the studios, and it’s unlikely that Bond will have much trouble finding a new studio to fund his spying exploits.
