It’s quite an achievement to live to be 90 years old these days. It’s quite another thing to be a 90-year-old woman who has decided to do everything she’s always wanted to do. Hasselteen Rumbo is no ordinary great-grandmother. Despite being 90 and living in the Independence Manor Care Center (a senior facility), Hasselteen is determined to do everything she’s always wanted to do, but never done, including going to prom as a nonagenarian.
That’s the second of Hasselteen’s bucket list items. Her first bucket list item was going to her first concert. The activities director of Independence Manor, Tracy Bunch, arranged Hasselteen to have a limosine ride, sixth-row tickets, and even got her backstage to meet Reba McEntire in her first concert trip. Now she’s getting to check off a second item on her list by attending the prom at Fort Osage High School. She’ll be accompanying her 18-year-old great-grandson, Ron Blalock, to Arrowhead Pavilion. She won’t be dancing, but she will be making a splash in a black sequined dress!
Hasselteen says, “When I turned 90, everything just exploded. I’ve never been to a prom, and it’s awful.” Don’t wait until 90 to accomplish the things on your bucket list; you might not make it that far.
