The komodo dragon is not an animal to be trifled with. For one, it has a poison in its saliva. Then there’s the matter of its size. And, as always, there’s the beast’s vicious bite. They’re really dangerous critters to be around, as 20-year-old Agustinus Jenaru could tell you. He’s one of the lucky few to tangle with a komodo dragon and live, after he punched the creature in the face when it latched onto his left hand on Rinca Island in Komodo National Park.
Jenaru was working in an unfinished bungalow when the komodo dragon, all 6 and a half feet of it, slithered into the building and bit him on the left hand. When it wouldn’t let go, Jenaru pummeled the creature on the snout until it got the message, skittering off back into the jungle. The lizards live only on the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Padar; Jenaru is the second person to be bitten this year by one of the rare beasts.
