If you wanted to know for sure whether or not the iPhone 4G was coming out soon, and all those leaks didn’t give the news away for you, here’s the latest clue. Wal-Mart, which sells iPhones and AT&T contracts at its stores, has decided it’s time to move units off the shelves and clear space for the next generation of iPhone. In order to do this, Wal-Mart has slashed the price of the iPhone to $97. That’s over a 50% discount!
Of course, the official party line from Wal-Mart’s senior category director for wireless, Mehrdad Akbar, is that the iPhone price slash “is our commitment to always lead on price.” Then again, when the 4G comes out, retailers are expected to slash remaining 3G stock prices to $99. Wal-Mart has just decided to lead the way and begin the cheap 3G iPhone product dump early.
It’s probably a wise move on their part to get the product out the door early. There’s going to be a lot of unsold 3G iPhones floating around in a few weeks. May as well try to get them out the door before the competition.
