It started as a hobby, borne out of a single trip with some classmates at Manchester Metropolitan University. Karl Maddocks, a now-25-year-old, and some friends had a nudist experience while on vacation in Wales, and he wanted to share that experience with the world. Hence Skinbook, a Facebook alternative for nudists that bills itself as the world’s largest social networking site dedicated to nudism and the nudist lifestyle.
The website is designed to help ease frustrations with the status quo of nudist communities. Says founder Maddocks, “You shouldn’t need to fill out application forms and pay fees to clubs, just go to the beach and get your kit off.” It started out as a hobby, and was only expected to draw a handful of users; however, it has grown from a hobby into a full time job, with over 9,000 members!
They plan to gather together this summer in Brighton, England, for the first conference on Skinbook and how to continue to grow the site. Presumably, there will be plenty of nudist favorites like topless gardening, playing video games, and running through traffic screaming that you’re Jesus.
