Papier mache, the word for making stuff out of shredded paper and glue, is actually a French term meaning “chewed-up paper.” Unfortunately for Gill Bird, dogs can’t read and English dogs can’t speak French, because her Jack Russell terrier got into a heap of trouble thanks to a little chewed-up paper. Generally, Gill is home when the mail arrives to protect the post from her dog Toby. However, after running out to get herself a snack, she discovered that Toby had turned the mail into a snack and, in the process, had glued his jaws shut with envelope glue and shredded paper.
“I came home with some fish and chips for lunch. I went to give him a chip and wondered why he wouldn’t take it,” said Ms. Bird. “He had bubbles and saliva coming out of his mouth and he had a strange look on his face. It’s just really bizarre. I can’t help but laugh.”
The dog was driven to nearby Stubbington and the office of vet Ian Wooding, who had to sedate the dog while he and a nurse spent 10 minutes scraping off the crude cast wiring Toby’s jaw shut. That’s one serious papercraft job!
