Bangladesh is a nation that loves its soccer. Football is such a big deal in Bangladesh’s capital of Dhaka that when fans were unable to see the Nigeria-Argentina match, there was a riot! That’s why the government has ordered that factories shut down for World Cup matches. Not to spare workers so they can watch, but to save electricity and keep the grid flowing to televisions, rather than to the economy.
“We have issued the order to the factories to switch off for five hours every evening in a desperate move to save electricity so people can watch the play on televisions,” said Dhaka Electric Supply Company managing director Saleh Ahmed. “This is an undesirable decision from an economic point of view but we were rather compelled,” he added. Riots tend to be very convincing when it comes to getting your way.
Hey, maybe that can work for Twitter’s diminished availability! All you have to do is force off all the so-called social networking experts and marketers for a few hours, and then bingo, we can tweet about soccer all we want without crashing the system! Those Bangladeshi are brilliant!
