In the movies, Kevin Costner defended the soggy world of Waterworld against the machinations of evil villains like Dennis Hopper’s Deacon and his band of marauding smokers. In the real world, Kevin Costner is defending the oceans of planet earth against the incompetence of evil corporations like BP. As it turns out, the Hollywood actor is a lot smarter than I’ve given him credit for, as he’s invented a machine designed to clean up oil spills in water and actor Kevin Costner has been contacted by BP to aid in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill cleanup.
The machine being used by BP is called the V20, from Ocean Therapy Solutions. Costner funneled $20 million dollars of his own money into the development of the machine, which can separate oil from water with 99% effectiveness. That’s very impressive, given that BP can’t even manage to properly cram a giant wad of chewing gum into a hole.
“It may seem an unlikely scenario that I’m the one delivering this technology at this moment in time, but from where I’m sitting, it is equally inconceivable that these machines are not already in place,” Costner said, no doubt aware of just how weird it is for me to write sentences saying things like ‘Kevin Costner and scientist brother to save the earth from Big Oil.’ Hey, if you can help, you should pitch in and help out!
