Thanks to some less-than-stellar engineering and the growing popularity of Google’s Android phone OS, I’m not so sure I could be tempted to the dark side, but the rumor is out there (for the second time): the iPhone might be coming to Verizon for real, as reported by multiple sources to Bloomberg. Could Apple be seeing the light? Maybe so.
I’ve been wondering for awhile what kind of exclusivity deal Apple had with AT&T, and when exactly the deal would run out and free Apple to latch onto the biggest phone carrier in the country, who has more than enough infrastructure to support the iPhone’s user base (unlike AT&T). Given how well the iPhone sold on AT&T, just imagine how much they’d sell if they had access to Verizon’s 90 million (or so) customers? There’s no way Apple could ignore that huge market of people who can’t use the iPhone forever.
I have to say that it’s about time. Tethering the iPhone to AT&T was a good idea in the beginning, when nobody knew if the phone would be an expensive bomb or not. Now that it’s a known property, it’s time to give it to everyone and REALLY start bringing in the dough.
