What’s the best way to move from unknown British stage actor to superstar? Well, if you’re Andrew Garfield, you get bitten by a radioactive spider and develop super powers by taking on the role of Peter Parker in Sony’s rebooted Spider-Man franchise. Garfield, best known for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Boy A, picks up the role left off by Tobey Maguire for director Marc Webb, who is helming the 3-D reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, beating out a host of better-known actors for the right to squeeze into the spandex uniform.
Here’s my question. Tobey Maguire is, at 35, too old to play Peter Parker. However, he took on the role when he was 28 and looked the part of a relatively young super hero. This guy is 26, and may be a year or two older by the time the movie actually starts filming/finishes filming. He’s already too old for the part, so what are they going to do in a few years when this guy is too REALLY old to play Peter Parker?
Am I giving Sony too much benefit of the doubt in saying they’ve got a franchise on their hands (again)?
