Well, as it turns out, Paul the Octopus was right to back the Spanish, as Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time in the finals of the 2010 World Cup. It’s hard to believe that the World Cup kicked off on June 11; FIFA crammed 62 games into 30 days! That’s incredible! It is Spain’s first World Cup title and the third disappointing World Cup finals loss for the Orange.
It was a hard-fought victory over the Dutch, with the neat style of Spanish football hampered by the physical and aggressive Dutch, who decided that since they couldn’t out-cute the Spanish, they had to out-fight them. As a result, the game featured 14 yellow cards and some staggeringly rough moments, such as Nigel de Jong’s flying kick to the chest of Xabi Ramos. It was really impressive/painful, and got worse with every replay.
Still, in spite of all that, it was a great game between two of the best teams in the world. It’s hard to ask for more than close calls, hard fouls, and an overtime victory. Congratulations to the Spanish on a hard-fought victory, and better luck next time, Netherlands.
