The unfortunate souls known as flushers are the people who go down into the sewers and clean up the waste that results from what is called by Thames Water “sewer abuse.” The only things you’re supposed to flush down your commode are water, your waste, and toilet paper. The reality is the sewer is often used to dispose of all manner of grease and run-off, which is why the flushers had to remove a giant wall of fat from under Leicester Square.
It’s the largest clean-up of the sewers ever organized in the UK, and with good reason. The flushers removed 9 double-decker buses full of congealed, rotting fat from within the sewers. As you can see from the picture, it’s gross.
Even by sewer standards, it’s pretty nasty, as the flushers had to be equipped with breathing apparatus and protective suits. Said Danny Brackley, a flusher working on the project, “We’re used to getting our hands dirty, but nothing on this scale. We couldn’t even access the sewer as it was blocked by a four-foot wall of solid fat.”
