Every morning, a German police officer named Martin Schauder spends 15 minutes just getting dressed in the many required layers he wears every working day. When he comes home from a hard day policing the streets of Muenster, Germany, he takes another 15 minutes to peel out of his police uniform. For most people, that’s just how life goes, but Schauder figured that his 30 minutes per day of duty-related dressing an undressing earned him 45 hours of unpaid overtime per year, and he’s going to collect. An administrative court agreed, and the cop won a week of extra vacation for the time spent dressing!
So where does it stop? Can I claim overtime because I spend 15 minutes getting dressed, too? Or can I claim my time and mileage spent driving to work? If so, I have about five years worth of time owed me from my current job alone! In a way, I can see his point, at least when it comes to dressing for work, since the uniform he cites features 9 required items, plus an optional pair of knee pads.
