It looks like the year of the electric car is upon us. Two of the most high-profile electric car releases from mainstream companies, the Chevy, err… Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf are slated to be hitting showrooms within the next few months and, fittingly, details are starting to leak out about both of them. For starters, the Chevy Volt will retail for $41,000 versus the Leaf’s retail price of $32,780.
Once you add in government rebates, the Volt’s price tag is down to a more reasonable $33,500. However, because of the Nissan’s extra testing, it retails for only $20,280 once it qualifies for an emissions quality rebate on top of the government’s $7,500 electric car rebate. GM didn’t allow the Volt to go through that testing, saying that it would have forced them to alter the release date, which seems fishy.
Strangely enough, the two cars feature similar leasing options. The Volt will lease for $2500 down and $350 a month; the Leaf requires $1999 down and $349 a month. Both companies feel lease options will be popular, given the unproven technology behind both automobiles.
