It’s a spider-phobic person’s worst nightmare. Apparently, two massive Chilean Rose tarantulas, both the same age and gender, were discovered in British backyards within two miles of one another, and the RSPCA feels that this might be the beginning of a trend. They believe that 20-year-old Lisa Broad’s tarantula capture in Sharples near Bolton, Greater Manchester, and the discovery of a second tarantula in neighboring Lostock means someone has dumped a shipment of tarantulas loose in the UK.
“It is rare for one of these to come in and we saw… there had been another with the same characteristics found outdoors,” said Bugworld curator Jenny Dobson. “It is likely they came from the same place. It would be too much of a coincidence otherwise for two breakouts and they can’t survive in the wild for long with the UK climate.”
Still, while they can’t live long, it’s best to be on the lookout. Chilean Rose spiders are very large, and while they’re slow-moving (and tasty), they also can potentially blind you by spitting hairs into your eyes, so keep an eye out. Well, uh, how about just pay attention? Yeah, that’s better.
