In the movie The Karate Kid, there’s a memorable scene in which Mr. Miyagi catches a fly with a pair of chopsticks. Huang Yu-yen is not impressed. The woman, from Yunlin County in southern Taiwan, has put Miyagi to shame by capturing not one fly, but 4 million mosquitoes in a competition organized by pest control company Imbictus International. She beat out 72 other contestants to take home the top prize, and her feat will be filed with the Guinness World Records organization for potential inclusion in next year’s edition of the book.
So just how many mosquitoes is 4 million? Well, her pile of mosquitoes weighs 3 pounds 5 ounces. She doubled up her closest competitor’s total. How impressive is that?!
She’s catching more mosquitoes than your average skeeter-eater fish, and that’s impressive. Mosquitoes are considered a serious threat to health, especially in Taiwan. While the country is free of malaria, dengue fever and other mosquito-spread diseases are still troublesome on the island.
