It might have taken him a few games longer than he would have wanted, but during a game yesterday versus the Toronto Blue Jays, Alex Rodriguez became the seventh member of Major League Baseball’s 600 home-run club, alongside such all-time greats as Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and his famous curse, Ken Griffey Jr., and Willie Mays. Oh yeah, there’s also some of baseballs most infamous names on that list, like Barry Bonds (the home-run king), Sammy Sosa, and now Rodriguez, all of whom are rumored to have used or have admitted to using steroids.
Rodriguez, once thought to be a shoe-in to hit 800 homers, may not be a lock. While he’s the youngest member of the home run club, baseball’s ban on performance enhancing drugs and amphetamines has declined hitting numbers all across the board, which explains the massive explosion of no-hitters throughout baseball this season. A-Rod’s lingering hip problems also work against his longevity, as he has never quite recovered from his surgery in 2009. Still, in spite of this, A-Rod hit 30 homers last season and is on pace for similar numbers this year.
Cue the debate about the Hall of Fame and PEDs, baseball fans.
