It launched with great fanfare. For days, all anyone wanted was an invitation to join up to Google Wave. It was supposed to be the next big thing in project use, collaboration, online data sharing, and all the other buzzwords tossed around so casually by technology writers. Unfortunately, once a lot of people (myself included) got onto Google Wave, we had one question: “So what are we supposed to do here?” Well, not enough people came up with answers, so Google is ending development on Google Wave.
However, fear not Wave fans. Google Wave will live on, and many of its features, like real-time typing and drag-and-drop features, will be incorporated into other products. In spite of the failure, Google CEO Eric Schmidt is chipper. “Remember, we celebrate our failures. This is a company where it’s absolutely OK to try something that’s very hard, have it not be successful, and take the learning from that.”
Here’s Schmidt answering some questions about Wave and the state of Google development. If nothing else, you have to really admire Google’s mindset and willingness to risk things. That’s why they’re trying so many things and working so hard to build the Google Chrome OS and take on the competition. I have to admit, Google Chrome has finally won me over as a browser.
