It’s an annual event. This weekend, my parents woke up early and headed out to take part in the traveling of the World’s Largest Yardsale. It’s an incredible string of yard sales that stretches from Hudson, Ohio, in the north to Gadsen, Alabama, all the way to the south. That’s an incredible 675 miles down Route 127, and it’s never been bigger. Thanks to the economic hardships, people are spending more at yard sales than ever before.
The 127 Sale has been a Godsend to people in Hudson, which is suffering thanks to a recent spate of factory closings. It’s all that’s keeping folks like Stan and Michelle Stevens afloat. “This has been huge,” says Stan, 46. “You can tell that with the economy, people are shopping more at garage sales like this and less at stores.” Of course, sales are up, but prices are down. “We priced everything really low, and still most people are offering half of what we put on the sticker,” Michelle Stevens said. “That’s how you can tell that people are really struggling.”
People are really struggling, both buyers and sellers. However, a yard sale is a great way to clean out the house and bring in a little spending money in tight times. Hopefully, all the sellers along Route 127 did well yesterday on both counts, and all the buyers got some great bargains.
