Not a week ago, I was discussing with people the joys and pleasure that can be derived from the humble Pop-Tart. As my waistline can attest, I’m a big fan of Kellogg’s jelly-filled toaster pastry, which is apparently mostly sugar and preservatives (which is why it tastes so freaking GOOD). Apparently, I’m not the only fan of Pop-Tarts, because Kellogg’s has opened Pop-Tarts World, a Pop-Tarts-themed “experience” in the heart of Times Square.
Kellogg’s is the third confectioner to open a themed-store in the New York City landmark, behind the Hershey Store and M&M’s World. The Pop-Tarts World is more than 3,000 square feet dedicated to all things Pop-Tart. There are unusual Pop-Tarts treats, like Pop-Tarts sushi, Pop-Tarts clothing and hats, Pop-Tarts art from famous artists, and even a customized Pop-Tart station. If you’ve got a brilliant idea for a Pop-Tart flavor, pass it along to the store staff and you just might get your wish!
Pop-Tarts World is a product of the modern social networking era. While Pop-Tarts have been around for 50 years, and Kellogg’s sells 2 billion of the toaster pastries a year, it wasn’t until the company got on Facebook that they saw their popularity; the Pop-Tarts Facebook page is in the top 20 of all Facebook pages. “There’s really nothing like a Pop-Tart,” says Kellogg’s brand manager Andrew Shripka. “We were able to see the passion from consumers for the brand; this is another way to interact directly with them.”
