There’s a lot of things you can say about The Carpenters, the eponymous 1970’s music group featuring siblings Richard and Karen Carpenter, but the one thing you can safely say about them is that they didn’t produce many bombs during their hit-making run in the disco decade. Unfortunately, no one told this to the Cypress, California, police, who called the bomb squad when a suspicious package landed on their doorstep; as it happens, that suspicious package was a 45-RPM Carpenters single.
The package, which was not labeled and did not feature postage or a return address, was left on the doorstep of the Cypress Police Department. Thinking the package might be dangerous, they called nearby Orange County Police Department’s bomb squad in to investigate. They moved the package to the parking lot, opened it up, and boom, there’s a record with a note. The note asked the police to assist in finding the record’s original owner.
