For a guy who has only been on the air for a few years, Tomasz Schafernaker has a habit of getting himself in trouble on a pretty regular basis. The Polish-born weatherman for BBC News joined the national outfit in 2006 and has already found himself in hot water previously. In 2006, he had to apologize for calling a portion of Scotland “Nowheresville.” He’s also drawn controversy by posing shirtless for a gay magazine. Now, the wacky weatherman let his finger do the talking as cameras caught Schafernaker flipping his coworker Simon McCoy the bird live on national television.
To their credit, the staff covered up the incident pretty quickly. Schafernaker was able to turn his rude gesture into a cheek-rub, which is the secret of every high school bird-flipper ever. McCoy remained composed and immediately apologized on air, saying, “Every now and then there’s always one mistake, that was it.” Both the BBC and Schafernaker apologized, with Schafernaker blogging: “Prior to a live weather bulletin, I made a gesture off camera joking with my fellow presenters and without warning the camera went live to the weather studio … I am very sorry for any offence that might have been caused by my actions.”
