For millions of people around the world, The Statue of Liberty is more than just a giant woman in a toga standing in New York Harbor. She’s a symbol of freedom, of the promise of a better life in America, of the fulfillment of the American Dream. For that reason, that old French dame is a big deal to a lot of people, and now you can own a piece of her. The Statue of Liberty’s nose-tip is up for auction in New York City.
The nose is actually one of four that was created during the Statue of Liberty’s 1984 renovation. One was used in the statue, one was destroyed, one’s in a private collection, and this one will soon be in a private collection. It’s not a one-of-a-kind item, but it’s about as close as you will ever be able to get to something nobody else will ever own. The president of Guernsey’s Auction House, which is conducting the memorabilia auction (which also includes a motorcycle from JFK’s assassination motorcade and a pair of James Dean’s sunglasses), Arlan Ettinger, says the nose-tip is “actually quite good-looking.”
I just really, really hope this stays out of the hands of some kind of freaky nostril fetishist.
