Five years ago, during New Year’s Eve partying in Herne, Germany, a 30-year-old Polish man was hit in the back of the head. He was bleeding and a little shaken up, but he wasn’t hurt and, as such, didn’t get any medical treatment. Fast forward five years and the man is now 35. He feels a lump on the back of his head. Worried about cancer, he goes to the doctor to get it checked out only to find out that it’s a bullet. The partier was shot 5 years ago and didn’t notice it.
In the man’s defense, after five years, there’s not a lot I can remember, especially after a night of partying. However, he was shot in the head, so there’s that. Granted, it was only a .22 caliber bullet, but still. The bullet pierced the skin and hit his skull, but didn’t get any penetration into the bone.
It’s a combination of incredible luck and low muzzle velocity, plus a little bit of liquid courage and natural Eastern European resistance to weapons. It’s like they’ve got Kevlar skin or something once you get past the Iron Curtain.
