Democrat Christopher Young is well-known to politicos in Providence, Rhode Island. Whenever the mayorship is up for grabs, there’s Chris in the fray of hopefuls. He’s running as one of five candidates for Providence mayor this year. However, he’s never pulled out the ultimate campaign stunt: a marriage proposal during a live, televised mayoral debate.
Young proposed to his long-time girlfriend and campaign manager, Kara Russo. Ms. Russo is also running for Rhode Island state Attorney General, as it happens. She accepted his proposal, the ring was put on her finger, and congratulations were issued all around before Young stopped being a fiance and started being a politician again.
Since a politician can never keep a campaign promise, and technically this promise of marriage was made during a campaign appearance, Young’s vote-mongering emerged almost immediately. After she accepted, a few moments later he clarified his position on marriage, saying that he’d only marry Ms. Russo if he won the position of mayor (and you thought romance was dead). Isn’t that just like a politician to go back on his campaign promises like that?
