Dan Goodwin, AKA SpiderDan, has really earned that nickname. He’s one of the world’s most successful scalers of high-rise buildings, even if he hasn’t been active for awhile. Some of his previous climbs have been the CN Tower in Toronto, the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and several other climbs. He even claims to have been approached by the US military to train them how to climb the World Trade Centers in 2000, but became sick with a serious form of cancer and turned down the offer. However, SpiderDan is back, scaling the 58-floor Millennium Tower in San Francisco to promote cancer awareness and his new book.
“The No. 1 reason Dan was on that tower today was that he wants to call attention to the lack of ability to rescue people from skyscrapers in this country,” said Skyscraperman co-author D.B. Guidinger. “We could use helicopters to do rooftop rescues, and there are other methods – a lot of things are better than what we have now. Sure, we’re plugging the book, too, but the book is a byproduct of all of this. It’s just where he put it all down in writing.”
After finishing his climb, the 54-year-old SpiderDan was arrested by San Francisco police and charged with trespassing and creating a public nuisance. At least he didn’t need to be rescued, huh?
