It’s a shocking upset. To me, you’d think there’s nothing more Texas-approved than taking delicious beer and figuring out a way to deep-fry it inside a pretzel, but apparently there’s one thing more Texas, and that’s Frito pie. At the Big Tex Choice Awards, the fried-food contest held every year at the Texas State Fair, Texas Fried Frito Pie took the top prize, besting out my personal favorite, fried beer. It’s truly a sad day for America.
Still, it’s not all bad. Fried beer did win the Most Creative award at the contest, so that’s better than nothing, right? As for the winner, it’s battered and fried chili, cheese, and Fritos. Don’t ask me how they fried all that; I assume creator Michael Thomas used cheese and Fritos to build a shell around the chili, then battered that whole mess and flash-fried it to form a sort-of unholy Hot Pocket version of a heart attack.
Texans do love beer, but I can only think that the fact the fried beer was Guinness was what held fried beer back from being a winner. If only he’d fried up Shiner Bock or added some kind of dead animal meat to the mix!
