The journey of the polar bear from the Arctic Circle to a beach near Bude in Cornwall, England was a remarkable one. Or it would have been a remarkable journey, had it been a polar bear carcass that ended up washing 2,700 miles from the polar ice to England’s shores. As it turns out, the polar bear was actually just a cow bleached white by salt water, but that didn’t stop ITV from jumping on the polar bear story.
IVT West Country reporter Naomi Lloyd informed viewers of the polar bear at 8 AM local time, only to end up with egg on her face. “A walker in Cornwall has caught an extraordinary sight on camera. A polar bear has washed up on a beach near Bude. The bear comes from the Arctic Circle and an investigation is under way as to how it could have ended up there.” ITV pulled the newsworthy-for-the-wrong-reason spot when it was discovered that the bear was a cow (but how someone got a cow mistaken for a bear I’ll never know, as one is potentially bipedal and the other is a cow).
