Katy Perry, the singer best known for her ode to bisexual curiosity “I Kissed A Girl” and her crazy outfits, has often courted controversy as a way of getting attention, selling records, and generally transforming herself from a Christian musician named Katy Hudson into pop icon Katy Perry. Unfortunately, a lot of that image comes from her ability to sell herself as a sex symbol, and that sort of thing just doesn’t fly on Sesame Street. After a public backlash, Sesame Workshop has pulled Katy Perry’s scheduled appearance from the show.
After a video promoting Perry’s appearance on the show showed Perry wearing a cleavage-exposing lime green bustier while singing a duet with beloved puppet Elmo, the complaints started rolling in. That forced Sesame Street’s producers to make a decision to pull her appearance from the show thanks to her two best-known talents. “In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on YouTube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers,” said Sesame Workshop in a press release. “We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents.”
Still, Sesame Street is leaving the video up on YouTube, which you can see below as Katy and Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash do a duet of Perry’s song “Hot N Cold.”
